Ozyegin University Institutional Repository: Article Processing Charge (APC)

What is an Article Processing Charge?

Article Processing Charges are publication fees that are charged by publishers to cover the cost (editing, peer review, hosting, archiving, preservation) of making an article open access. This fee is a one-off payment to cover publishing services in gold or hybrid Open Access journals. Gold open access journals make articles free for readers, but charge authors. Hybrid journals are subscription-based but give authors the option of making their article open access for a fee. This new business model, also called “APC”or “publication fee,” is an Open Access method where the author of the article pays the fee. Due to publication ethics, the Article Processing Fee (APC) is expected to be paid when the author uploads the article to the journal management system. This fee may be paid by the author, the author's institution, or the research funder. No editorial review and evaluation process is initiated without a fee.

Read and Publish Agreements

Read & Publish agreements are designed to support the transition to an open scholarly publishing system. The Read and Publish Agreements between the institution and the publisher through various consortia and institutional memberships allow the authors to publish in open access or hybrid journals without paying the Article Processing Fee - APC.

Özyeğin University has signed Read and Publish Agreements to enable researchers at the University to publish their research open access published by ACM Publishing, ACS Publishing, IOP Publishing, Cambridge University Press and Oxford University Press. However, TÜBİTAK ULAKBİM signed with Wiley Publishing the first national-level “Read & Publish” agreement which has developed as a new model in scientific journal publishing and is becoming increasingly widespread in the world. All eligible articles accepted for publication in these journals are not subject to APCs. It is important to keep in mind that these Agreements may not cover all journals from each publisher.

Association for Computing Machinery (ACM)

The ACM Agreement gives immediate Open Access (OA) publishing in ACM’s subscription journals. Özyeğin University has signed a "Read and Publish" agreement with ACM allowing corresponding/lead authors can publish open access in ACM's Hybrid and Gold Open Access journals, and conference proceedings with no APC fees. There is no limit to the number of articles to be published.

The corresponding author should be a Özyeğin University author.

How Do I Make My Research Open Access?

There are two ways to make your work open access

1. Open access publishing (Gold Open Access or Hybrid Open Access)

Gold Open Access journals do not require a subscription. All articles are published Open Access under licenses that permit sharing and reuse. Depending on the journal's business model, a Gold OA journal may require authors or funders to pay an Article Processing Charge (APC) after article acceptance. Hybrid Open Access journals require a subscription. However, they give authors the option to make their individual article Open Access by paying an Article Processing Charge (APC) after article acceptance.

2. Self-archiving in an open access repository (Green Open Access)

Green Open Access refers to self-archiving generally of the pre or post-print in a subject-based repository or an institutional repository, for example eResearch@Ozyegin. Publishers stipulate which version of the paper or article can be deposited and specify an embargo period following publication before the paper can be made open access. It may be closed access on the repository for an embargo period after publication.

It is worth noticing that while social networking services such as ResearchGate and Academia.edu make it easy to share your publications, they are not considered official repositories and therefore don't qualify as green OA.

Özyeğin University Library is available to help you identify potential open access publication venues and repositories for self-archiving.
