Overview of Psychology

Psychology is the scientific study of human behavior and experience. Through systematic observation and research, psychologists attempt to explain how and why human beings act and react to the world around them. The emergence of psychology as an independent scientific discipline rather than a branch of philosophy is commonly dated to 1879 when Wilhelm Wundt opened the first psychological laboratory in Leipzig, Germany. As the field of psychology expanded, various schools of thought developed. Although all purported to be based on scientific method, they differed on the matter to be studied, how they defined the goal of psychology, and their research methodology.
