Defining Sustainability

Sustainability has a number of connected meanings. The first is a sense of futurity, sustaining something into the future. A second relates to ideas of supporting and developing some process or thing. Related to this is the sense of providing the right or necessary means to support some end, entity or process. Sustainability is related to the idea of sustainable development, which has become a central concept in international environmental politics, in that it is taken as a shorthand way of referring to harmonious, secure, stable and long-term productive relations between human society and the natural environment. However, many environmental activists and writers reserve sustainability as indicating something more radical and stronger than the ‘reformist’ notion of sustainable development, in the sense that sustainability unlike sustainable development, incorporates a concern for the natural world as something more than the just the means to human development ends.
